Eight check dams built to harvest rain water

The state government has assured farmers in the region not to worry about the delayed north east monsoon, as it has taken a series of measures for the improvement of the water situation in general and welfare of farmers in particular, said a statement from the district administration. The statement said the government has adopted many agricultural engineering solutions over the last four years to harvest rain water and ensure there is no shortage.

According to the statement, eight check dams have been built along the Western Ghats. "A check dam is a measure to check and slow down the flow of jungle streams and harvest the water from it in the process," said an agriculture engineer. The check dams have been built at a cost of 5crore, said the statement. "The check dam at Nandangarai might not give us water directly, but has definitely played a role in improving the ground water table in the area which in turn helps us draw water with a borewell," said Veerabhadran K, a farmer from Vellingiri.

Besides the check dams, the statement says that the government has built 14 storage units to save rain water at a cost of 42lakh in water shed areas and 10 farm ponds have also been created to save rain water. "Additionally, the solar powered pumpset schemes, which offers 80% subsidy for solar panels to power pumpsets has also helped many farmers," said the statement. T Kathiresan a farmer from Devarayapuram, who was often struggling with power outage and low voltage, has installed the pumpset making use of the scheme. "I paid only 1.20lakh for the panels and pumpset which actually costs more than 5lakh," he said.
