Post office ATM launched in coimbatore

The post office savings bank ATMs in western region were inaugurated at the head post office on Good Shed road as part of the IT modernization project, core banking solution (CBS). The project which is being implemented across India aims to cover all post offices. The ATM was inaugurated by M S Ramanujam, chief post master general, Tamil Nadu circle and Manju P Pillai, Postmaster General, western region.

"The ATMs at Coimbatore head office (HO), Erode HO and Bhavani HO will be operational very soon," said M S Ramanujam, chief post master general, Tamil Nadu circle. CBS will provide facilities like ATM banking, internet banking, mobile banking and phone banking to the post office savings bank customers and will be available 24x7, just like any other ATM. Ramanujam said that, For the first couple of months, the ATMs will be operational six days of the week from Monday to Saturday between 6am and 8pm. The ATM cards will be issued free of cost to all account holders.


In the initial phase, the ATM cards can used only in the post office ATMs and services will be available only to the post office account holders. Any customer with a minimum balance of 5,000 can apply for the ATM card. In a couple of months' time the minimum balance will be reduced and the services will be integrated with other banks as well, said Ramanujam. The postal department plans to make nearly 500 ATMs across the state operational by this financial year, which would also cover rural areas. The R S Puram post office will also have an ATM service soon, said postmaster general, western region Manju P Pillai. Manju P Pillai said that, the post office in the western region has 69 lakh savings bank accounts and more than 12.5 lakh accounts were opened in the last financial year.

Customers can withdraw upto 25,000 per day and 10,000 per transaction. "This is the sixth ATM that was inaugurated since March 31 and the first one in the western region. More than 130 post offices in the western region and 608 post offices across the state will be covered by the CBS," said Ramanujam. The postal department is also expanding its e-commerce services and has tied up with Amazon to launch 'metro delivery', where products will be delivered within a day's time.

A few ATM cards were handed over to account holders by Ramanujam and the cash operations began in the ATM.
